The average salary for a funeral director is about $40,000 a year. If you work full time, you will most likely qualify for benefits like health, vision and dental insurance.

Average Salary by Level of Experience

When you first start your career as a funeral director and have an entry-level job, you will most likely earn between $21,000 and $46,000 a year. Once you have gained a little experience, between one and four years, you could earn as much as $21,000 to $50,000 a year.

Funeral directors who have five to nine years of experience can expect to earn $24,000 and $57,000 a year. Those who have between 10 and 19 years of experience usually have an average salary between $27,000 and $61,000 a year. When you become very experienced in the industry, and have 20 or more years of experience, you could potentially earn $24,000 and $77,000 a year.

Funeral directors can find jobs in states across the country. The services provided by these professionals are needed everywhere, from small towns to large cities. There are some states that have been shown to provide higher, on average, salaries for funeral directors. These states are Missouri, California, Pennsylvania, Texas, New York, Ohio and Florida.

Funeral directors who work at companies that have more employees tend to earn a higher salary. For example, if you work at a funeral home that employs one to nine people, you will likely earn between $23,000 and $52,000 a year. If you work at a company that has 10 to 49 employees, you could make $27,000 to $74,000 a year.  If you find a job at a company with 50 to 199 employees, you could make between $18,000 and $56,000 a year.

Funeral Director Job Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities for funeral directors are expected to grow about as fast as average for all jobs. Job opportunities for these professionals are projected to increase by 18 percent between 2010 and 2020.

If you are interested in becoming a funeral director, you’ll need to choose an appropriate mortician school, earn an associate’s degree in mortuary science and be licensed by your state. Some funeral directors go on to earn a bachelor’s degree. Many funeral directors take over family businesses, but this is not the only way to land this job. After you have earned your degree you can apply to work as a funeral director at an organization that has a job opening or you can open your own funeral home.
